History

The Bhutan Duty Free Shop formerly known as Foreign Drinks Store was established in 1972 under the Department of Revenue and Customs of the Finance Ministry.

The Company has been delinked from the civil service upon Royal Civil Service Commission’s recommendation and the Bhutan Duty Free Limited (BDFL), Thimphu was corporatized on 16th May 2016 and incorporated under the Companies Act of the Kingdom of Bhutan and operates as a State-Owned Enterprise.

The Company has a corporate office at Thimphu and runs the duty-free outlets at the Paro International Airport, Thimphu and Phuentsholing.

BDFL plans to open new outlets in the near future and also looks to explore a range of high value luxury items upon approval from the government.

Objective

A. The main objects to be pursued by the company on its incorporation are:

  1. To operate Duty Free Shops in the country including the Airports;
  2. To import and sell quality electronics and electrical goods, household goods, cosmetics, jewelries, watches, packaged food, confectionery, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages etc; and
  • Sale/export of domestic goods.

 

  1. The above objects incidental or ancillary to the attainment of the above objects are:
  2. Establish and operate duty free shops in different parts of the country including Airports to cater to the tourists/visitors;
  3. Make available range of quality imported and local goods free of duty to privileged persons/agencies identified by the Government;
  • Make available range of quality imported goods to hotels and restaurants on payment of applicable duty to hotels, restaurant and individuals;
  1. Act as agent/dealer for goods manufactured by foreign manufacturers for domestic/regional sale and re-export;
  2. Establishment and operation of bonded warehouses in collaboration with the Department of Revenue and Customs in different parts of the country;
  3. Own land and properties; and
  • Transport of goods to different locations.
